Simply amazing galleries, one of the best on PBase. I currently shoot birds and wildlife with Nikon D300 + 300f4+1.4TC= 420f5.6. A 500f4 will be my next lens but it will be quite some time before I can afford one. The Nikon 500f4 is about $2200 more than the Canon 500f4, therefore I am thinking of switching to Canon and with the savings, I can buy a 50D and some accessories or the 5D mark II. But before making the plunge to the 500f4, I am thinking of the 400f5.6 or the 100-400f5.6..........your 400f5.6 photos are sharp and so are some of your 100-400 photos. Which is sharper and better for BIF? Do you find that your 400f5.6 is used less now that you have the 500f4? cheers, Ken

Hi Gene, Stunning short and great gallery. I just love your pictures. I have been looking at your comments on "best for wildlife" at the dpreview site. I am trying to decide on a lens for general birding and wildlife. I'm using the Canon EOS 40D and the Canon EF 500 f/4L is out of my price range, so I am presently looking at the Canon EF 400 f/5.6L USM or the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. Hi Gene, I have been trying to decide on a lens for birding that is better than my 100-400. I have used that for a couple of years now and would like a 500 but that has been out of my price range. I think your pictures above all other comments or reviews have sold me on the 400 f5.6. I have a 20D but think the glass is more important at this time. Thanks for the gallery and the 500 f4 and 400 f5.6 pictures because although it is clear the 500 is a tad sharper the 400 sure appears to be a wonderful lens. Your technique and results really helped me a lot in making a decision. If you have any suggestions for me I would love to hear them. I do have a tripod and rss bh55 ballheaed. You clearly use the 400 for flight shots, do you do most of these hand held or on a tripod and if on a tripod what is your setup? Thanks again for such a great gallery. I came across your website while browsing for photos of hawks. I live in San Diego, CA and see these magnificent birds in the canyons near my house. I connect with these animals in a way that is hard to explain but in short I am looking for material that I can use for my next tattoo. I hope to find a photo of a hawk in flight, hopefully approaching the camera from straight on, below or above. If I find the right photo, I will have it tattooed onto my upper back from shoulder to shoulder. Gene, I can't get enough of your photography. I'm consistently blown away. Are you still using your 10D? and are you considering an upgrade soon? I have a 10D and considering upgrading to a 30D but don't know if I should save the money and put towards a better lens. I use the 100-400L now. I love to cruise the shore line of the lake in my boat and could use a faster lens for lower light situations. I'm struggling to figure out what my best combination would be. Any thoughts? Thanks! Gene, I'm pretty new to photography and had a couple of questions. First of all, sorry if this is not the place to ask. I have a 30d and my longest lens currently is a 70-200 f2.8 L is. This lens seems to be recomended by almost everyone ive talked too, but not for bird shots. I was curious as to whether it would be smart to buy a teleconverter for this lens, or buy canon's 400 f5.6. Secondly i was reviewing your posts on Dpreview.com and was wondering what the benefits of the extender tubes was, and why you use them. I was also wondering how you used them, meaning can they still be autofucused, and in combination with a teleconverter ect. I ask you because after seeing your pics i consider you the absolute go to guy for nature photography. Any help or advice for this young amature would be greatly appreciated.

Gene Yours hawks are inspiring to a Birding Pbaser going into his second year I like your point that the 500 gives a sharp but softer feel to the detail than the 400 I also think you have either trained birds or great patience and stealth Think fron the many number of photos it must be the latter Finally on a serious note I think Hawkman thinks like a hawk with fantastic photo results Thanks for sharing and inspiring Tom

Gene, You certainly don't know me, but I am a lurker over at dpreview. I appreciate your photos and look to your answers/comments that you give to others to learn more. Sorry I couldn't e-mail this question, but could you tell me how often you use RAW? The debate is alive and well over at dpreview, but since you take a lot of bird photos like I do, I would appreciate your input. If you do, on birds which do not have a lot of light or real dark colors, do you think it makes that much of a difference (i.e., in difficult lighting situations I see no problem using RAW, but it is the "normal" lighting situations which I struggle to justify the using RAW with)? Bob, I crop as little as possible. I usually do crop to change the aspect ratio from 3:2 to 4:3 if I can without compromising composition. If the shot is interesting I will crop a significant amount as long as the image is still sharp or has other redeeming values, but I avoid that as much as possible ( by getting it right at the picture taking end). If it is a 4:3 aspect I post 800x600 or 563x750, if 3:2 900x600 500x750. I usually reduce the size in photoshop in steps, and I usually compress to 11 out of 12 in photoshop. Gene

I visit your gallery to learn. It is very inspiring. I have a beginner's question. When you get a photo from your camera, besides any cosmetic post processing. What are your rules of cropping and resolution. I think I am posting mine in a poor way which reduces the sharpness. Gene: Greate pics. I did have a couple of question. Just got a Canon 20D, upgrading from an "old" (4 years) Olympus 2100Z with 1.7 teleconverter, and am trying to decide between the Canon 100-400L IS zoom and the 400L for bird shots. I noticed that your "hawk" and "eagle" galleries were shot with the zoom, but your "favorites" was shot with the 400. The "favorites" look a little sharper, but don't know if that's due to the lens, fortuitous location of the subject, or post processing. Obviously, I can afford only one, as I also am married. Would you please comment on the differences and which you recommend. Is there that much difference in sharpness? Tnanks, Mike

Dear Gene, I am writing to you about the possibility of using some of your photographs for an educational project that I have been working on. My name is Jonathan Amith. I am an anthropologist, a visiting researcher at Yale and Gettysburg College this year. Next year I will have a one-year position at U. Chicago. However, mostly I am an independent scholar working on language documentation and literacy. This project has been supported over the years by the U.S. Department of Education, the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Mexican Secretary of Public Education, among others. I was particularly interested in the photos of the Red-Tailed Hawk, Northern Harrier, and Great Blue Heron that I saw on the birdforum and your site. However, I have about 70 species with Nahuatl names, and I am looking for the excellent photographs for each. The project comprises two major parts: to develop an online learning environment for modern Nahuatl (Aztec) language and culture, and to create a sustainable effort at language documentation and revitalization in the Nahuatl speaking communities of central Guerrero, Mexico. My online project is up athttp://www.ldc.upenn.edu/nahuatl It comprises three sections: Lexicon, Grammar, and Encyclopedia. At present I am slowly working on all sections; for the Encyclopedia I am working on ritual texts, children's stories, and flora and fauna. I record texts digitally and then work with Nahuatl-speaking students who are part of a workshop on literacy and language documentation. The idea is to create materials for local archiving in the communities and schools, and for free access on the Internet. The arrow will take you to a page with a Nahuatl text. I plan on creating similar pages for each species of fauna, with a Nahuatl text, transcription, and translation; photos or illustrations; and sounds (e.g., of birds and some insects). The use is entirely non-profit and educational. I will also the materials in my own fieldwork to elicit Nahuatl names and texts about each species. CDs will be given to the communities and schools when each section of the Encyclopedia is in an advanced state. There will be no commercial use. Gene, I have a few questions for you. My 3 lens choices are the EF100-400 Zoom, EF300/4 IS + 1.4X TC or EF400/5.6. I'm am trying to decide between these 3 lenses. 1. How is the focus speed of the 100-400 Zoom. Is it as fast as a 400/5.6 2. Do you find the Image Stabilization feature on the 100-400 Zoom essential? 3. Do you sharpen your images in software? There are prime snobs out there. But the 300/f4 is a mighty fine lens. It came down to that + 1.4x and the 100-400 for me. Wish I could own both (well I could suppose, but my wife would have to shoot me). Gene

I think I recogize many of the locations you've shot your herons. I live in Wisconsin and many of your images have familiar settings. At any rate, I've been torn between buying an EF 100-400 Zoom or an EF 300/4 IS. Many photo snobs have been poopooing the Zoom! But after seeing your OUTSTANDING work, you've helped me make a decision. I am going for the EF 100-400 Zoom. Thank you for your inspiration.

Yes, unsharp mask- you almost have to because the 10D has a fairly strong anti-aliasing filter. I am fiddling with Fred Miranda's intellisharpen as well.

Single AF point is best. If you use multiple, unless you have a solid background like clear sky, your AF will focus between the flight subject and background in my experience. Hope you enjoy the lens ev. Gene

Because of you I just bought a 100-400L I am delighted with it. Something I never saw mentioned is af points for flying birds. I have been using one central af point,but is it better to have multiples? Thank for the great pictures EV

Your eagle photos are the most beautiful I have ever seen. I guess I have to get rid of my 25 year old Nikon and go for a new one with something more than my 75-200 lens. Again photos are outstanding. By the way have you tried Lock and Dam 18 North of Burlington, Iowa. There you can drive your car under the trees for 1/4 mile, look up and watch them watch you, plus their taking off and landing. It is the best place for close up viewing from there to lock #1.

Hey Gene! I've already commented on how awesome your photos are, I just wondered if you could give me a 1024x768 version of one of them so I can use it as a desktop wallpaper. You can do whatever you want to do to make it un-printable, but thats not my goal. Also, I would really like to ask you some questions on your techniques, because these wildlife shots are exactly the kinds of things I'm trying to learn to do. Gene, I am amazed by the sharpness of your photo's. I have been taking shots of birds for a long time, and rarely do I get close enough to get the kind of detail you seem to get consistantly. You will have to give me the details of how you "stalk" the birds. I can see that I have a lot to learn. Great work.

Gene, I found the link to your pbase site on the Dpreview forum. I enjoyed your work so much that I was late getting home from work (where my internet connection is faster). I've noticed that we both own a Canon 10D and the 100-400mm lens. I would be very interested to find out what you use to process your images outside of the camera. I am currently shooting in jpeg. I love the bird shots you've taken. Your hawk series was simply fantastic! In regards to your hummingbirds, have you had a chance to shoot a male ruby throated? The band of emerald green on their neck is quite attractive looking. I love herons and egrets and enjoyed looking at your gallery of them as well. You're fortunate to have the white egrets where you live. We only have great blues. I would however, like to brag that my grandmother has a blue heron rookery in her woods that only a few people know about. You walk back to it, and there are 2 or 3 big, tall trees that are filled with blue heron nests. Its amazing. They're all flying around, filling the sky. Looks like Jurassic Park. If you'd like, I could send you a few pics to give you an idea of the #s! Great work
