Your pictures of the abandoned mental hospital are extremely powerful! Thank you for posting them online!

I've always known that my great grandmother, Tabitha Condra, spent 22 years at this mental hospital. What I never understood was why. I located her death certificate and it said Dementia Preacox which was the name of her condition at the time. I wonder if any of the records remain from the 40's. She left three beautiful daughters at home to be raised by their father. So very sad.

I used to work at the New Hampshire state Hospital in the early 70's. I really liked your pics. I always wondered what happened to the place. I had to move back to L.A. because of health reasons and now I am 61 and live in MO. I wish I could get a hold of someone who worked there when I did. Who knows maybe they will stumble on the site the way I did (Google). Your pics are really great.

My dad worked at the state hospital when I was younger. He also worked at fairview. However, I can not say with confidence that he treated these people any better then any of the other staff. I have always wanted to go look around at both institutions. If you really do need "more people" I would be very willing to attend. Thank you for sharing these photos and your thoughts and comments. Very nice work.

I was looking at your photo's of the abandoned mental institute, some amazing history in those photos. Too bad most places like that take their secrets to the grave with them.

Iva,

Just looked over some of your galleries, and have to say that your quite the photographer,a bit different than the style I do (Weddings), but the asylum images are not only fascinating, very discriptive & you share with us your story through the windows
of your Nikon. BEAUTIFUL! I really enjoyed the titles, but ALL the images are great!

I'm too tall to follow you into the tunnels, and I probably wouldn't anyway, but I did enjoy your journalism, and can't wait for the story to continue.....
ps. get the D700, serious low-light-capabilities.
Nice Hot-Rod too!

Hi from England

I have just looked at your photos from the mental state hospital/ facility. I found them fascinating - who did sit in that chair and whose room was that. Do you have any more photos?
Dan Hall 09-Sep-2006 15:51

I am doing a paper for school on mentally illness and the insanity defense. Last night something came to me for my paper to prove my point I can show abuse in mental instititions. Many people do not beleive that mentally ill people are really sick they also think jail is a good place for them people dont understand that a mental institition is no walk in the park. Thank you this site was great!

hello,
my name is jared and I am a fine art photography student at IU bloomington. I have been in the BFA program here for two years and am planning to graduate this may. I have been photographing at central state for about six months now rather frequently. i am beginning to do a great deal of research to see if I can possibly get some funding to do my thesis photographic work about this building. I would love to talk with you some more about this subject. please feel free to reply!!!!

Very nice work! Have you done any b/w's? I've often wanted to return to my childhood home in Indiana to do some b/w's of the covered bridges in that part of the country. I think b/w really brings out all the textures of the subject. Again, nice work.

I was wondering how the D70 works in low light areas. For example a high school football game at night or action shots in that nature.

These images are all excellent, you have a very good eye for detail and colour (or is that color...) And your "Simple things" gallery is especially good.

Keep up the good work!

Iva,

I found your pbase galleries from your posting on Fred Miranda's site. I wanted to say that I really admire your photos. You have a great eye for composition. Your mental hospital series tells a great story and your short comments on each photo really increase the impact of each shot.

I'll continue watching to see what you come up with next. For now, I am marking you as a favorite.

Great job on your photo gallery. I liked the reflections gallery a lot!

Iva,

Wonderful pictures, especially the flowers and insects. Keep it up. Although the shots aren't as good as yours, you might want to have a look at my gallery athttp://www.mjgkramer.com. It's mainly travel photos of our 7 years overseas plus some animals and flowers.

Thanks J Pannoni for looking at my photos.
I too just got my D70. I've been using the Tamron 180mm macro lens.
I'm finding I do get better results if I use a flash. I use the SB800 with the
diffuser. I've been using it on the camera but I'm thinking a bracket mount is what
I need for such a long lens. I'm trying not to get overwhelmed with all there is to learn.
I have a loooong way to go. There are a great number of macro galleries on this site that
have been very helpful.
I'm having fun.
Guest 19-Jul-2004 06:52
Iva, great photos! thanks for stopping by my galleries. I just got my D70 too and have been spending lots of time in the backyard trying to get macro shots. You have some amazing macro shots. What lens are you using? do you use the flash?

I captures a great shot of a bee landing (it's on my site) but it's not quite in focus :(
